How They're Made
Hand block printing is a process that involves printing along the entire fabric width in 3-4 stages. Because it is hand made, this process can leave certain imperfections in the fabric in its print alignments or creases, giving the hand-blocked fabric its character. They add a different aesthetic to the textile.
The prep time for the hand-blocking is about 3 hours. Dyes, dye pad, block-making and fabric-pinning are all important pre-printing stages.
Part of the width of the fabric is stretched out and pinned on to a print table. After printing an entire round of colors, the block is released and the next part of the fabric width is pinned and printed again, followed by a third round of printing. Every round prints 50 inches of fabric, and a length of 5 meters may take an entire day of work. A single color print alone takes about 5-6 hours.
